You have landed your dream job, but those nervous butterflies are threatening to ruin your first week. Starting a new job is never easy, you have a new boss, new co-workers, and your surroundings are different. The game plan will be entirely new, and you will often feel like an outsider looking in. So, how can you make those first few days better without the hassle?

One way to get ahead is by first preparing yourself mentally. Ask your boss for what a daily routine looks like in their office. Going by that, you can prepare yourself for many of the activities. Also, get a new day planner. Even though you will be a rookie in the field, it is always a good idea to have daily goals for yourself. Write them down, so that you have something to keep your mind preoccupied. Also, another idea is to write down a motivational quote each week in your day planner, for inspiration.

Be sure to dress your best. On the weekend before you start, go through your clothes, and put together five outfits. These should be your power outfits, you know the kind, the ones that make you feel taller, and more confident. Blue is often a good choice, as well as a good black suit paired with a white collar. Taking time to dress for success will not only impress your employer, but it will make you feel more successful, and ready for the adventure ahead. Not to mention, you will knock out those nervous habits of changing multiple outfits each morning, and risking being late for work.

Be sure to leave well ahead of your schedule to allow you time for a coffee or tea each morning. Having a familiar routine that you have participated in will help your days feel more normal. Plus, it’s always a benefit to have something on hand when you walk in the door. Also, as you meet your new co-workers, be sure to shake their hand firmly, and repeat their names. This is another sign of confidence, and an excellent way to bond with your co-workers.

Show up each morning, at least 10 minutes ahead of yours schedule. Again, this is a simple way to prepare yourself mentally, and get comfortable in your new office. You will have time to set things up, learn the layout of your office equipment, and even learn things as simply as turning your computer on. It’s also a great sign to your new employer that you are series about this job.

When you attend your first meeting, be sure to take notes. Don’t be obvious about it, just a small note pad, and pen will do. Write down their objective, the areas that they seem to be concerned about, and beyond. This will help you to key in on areas that you may have expertise in, and can eventually share your own knowledge, as you gain trust with the company.

All in all, learn to be yourself. You got hired for a reason, and it is obvious that your new employers were impressed with how you presented yourself. Learn to be patient, always listening, and ready to learn a new task. Before you know it, you will be a pro at your new job, as the five days from hell will be over.

There are few Internet merchandising strategies that are more widely recommended than an offer of free shipping. The support for these recommendations comes from a study by Wharton Professor David Bell that indicated a free shipping offer that saves a customer $6.99 is more appealing to many than a discount that cuts the purchase price by $10. However, ground delivery charges have increased by so much since the 2006 publication of this paper that in 2011 only lightweight products can still be shipped for $6.99.

Cost of Shipping Via Commercial Ground Delivery

If you run a typical business and pay published rates, shipping a 2 pound package the 50 miles from Chicago to Gary via UPS costs over $8.00, and that is if it is sent to a commercial address. Add in another $2.50 for delivery to a residential address. Sending that same 2 pound package to Savannah, GA (home to my mother) adds another $2 to the cost of freight.

Consumer Perception

If the cost of shipping for a package exceeds $10, and the potential for price reductions on an item is decreased by $10 or more due to covering the cost of free freight, then the research into free shipping no longer applies. Among shoppers that do not take the time to calculate net cost, a competing Internet merchant that discounts the price rather than the cost of free shipping may have a perceived advantage once the differential exceeds $10. In comparing two products, one for $79.95 plus freight and another for $91.95 and free freight, the lower priced product may seem like the better deal to a shopper even if the net costs are equal. If an Internet shopper only compares published prices, and is drawn to the site with the lower posted price, the user typically inputs quite a bit of information into most shopping carts prior to a shipping quote being displayed. While the shopper may have sticker shock when they view the net cost including shipping, they are already invested in partially filling out the form and may complete it. At the very least, they are likely to return to the partially filled out form if they conduct comparison shopping and determine that the net costs are equal.

Free Shipping versus Low Price

While testing is required for different categories to determine whether an offer of free shipping or a reduced price point generates more sales, it would be unsurprising if $10 and 10% turn out to be magic numbers. Once the differential in price becomes more than $10 or 10% of the price of the product, a lower price may be more appealing to shoppers than free shipping. Research by consumer package goods firms indicates that a price reduction or a coupon had to be 10% or more of the value of the product in order to generate significant incremental sales. It is a bit of a leap, but this research provides a basis for a theory that at about the 10% level a price reduction becomes more compelling than free shipping to consumers.

Factors That Determine The Profitability of Free Shipping

Free shipping in 2011 may be difficult to justify for all but the merchants that enjoy a high ratio of profit margin to cost of shipping. There are five key factors come into play in play in determining the profitability of a free shipping offer: 1) the cost of shipping; 2) the price of the item for sale; 3) the profit margin on the item; 4) the incremental sales resulting from an offer of free shipping, and 5) whether free shipping is offered as an ongoing benefit or just as a short term promotion. The first two factors are easy to determine, the third factor, profit margin is often straightforward to calculate for a distributor, the fourth factor, incremental sales, can typically only be determined through testing, and the final factor, time frame, is at the discretion of the merchant. Ultimately, the profitability of a free shipping offer comes down to whether the perceived and actual benefit to the consumer generates enough incremental sales to produce net profits. While the impact and profitability of free freight may vary significantly based on whether this tactic is offered during promotion periods or as an everyday benefit, promotional offers of free freight are certainly more measurable.

Uncontrollable Impact On Profit Margins

An offer of free shipping makes the profit margin variable on each order depending on the distance the product is being delivered. Orders from locations close to a warehouse are more desirable. Spikes in orders from a geographic region can even have an impact on overall profitability. Further, profit margins take a hit every time the package delivery services impose a price increase, the timing of which is out of your control. The January 3, 2011 4.9% across the board price increase damaged the profit margins of all Internet merchants that offer free freight, and was particularly ugly for merchants that ship oversize boxes.

Conclusion

The increases in freight rates over the past five years have led to free shipping becoming an expensive merchandising tactic. If the cost of free shipping exceeds $10 per order and is being offered on a promotional basis or as a volume purchase incentive, consideration should be given to testing price reductions as a replacement tactic. If free shipping is being offered on an everyday basis, it may be appropriate to test eliminating it from specific products or categories and testing reduced prices as an alternative.

Are you sick of those office jobs where you spend most of your waking hours stuck in a cubicle ploughing through seemingly meaningless paperwork. Well first off, there are options for you to change this cycle – and secondly, your job may not be as scary as you think it is. There are positions out there that can only be handled by those with an adventurous spirit, a strong stomach and a fearless nature. If given the choice, I think most people would prefer the safety of IT jobs, but here are five of the scariest jobs around the world:

Mining:

Now I know there are thousands, if not millions, of people who work as miners throughout the world. Despite this, you can’t get around the fact that you are in a damp, dark hole underneath heavy soil and rock. Adding to this, there are explosions, heavy machinery and a variety of lethal situations that you are exposed to. Mining is definitely a necessary job, but no doubt a scary one.

Forensic Entomologist:

Dealing with the dead is already a stomach churning position, but now imagine having to deal with the insects that devour the decomposing bodies. Forensic entomologists sometimes have to carve up cadavers to find beetles, maggots and other creepy crawlies which will assist in an investigation.

Pharmaceutical Guinea Pig:

The potential earning here is good, but the dangers are high. Basically, you are paid to test new and unapproved medicines – this can result in having unknown after effects and possibly even lead to death in a worst case scenario. Some people can earn up to $300 per day while on a trial, which is why this is an attractive, yet scary, choice for many people.

Field Epidemiologist:

These doctors are placed at high risk as they work in remote settings away from the comfort of a hospital, and on top of that they have to deal with rare diseases that are relatively unknown. The tough conditions provide them with an uphill battle on a daily basis as well as limited supplies for them to work with. This also puts them at high risk of contracting a disease that they know little about.

Tower Technician:

Broadcasting towers stretch into the blue sky across the globe and the boom in the industry has meant more jobs for technicians who service the equipment. These narrow steel structures require someone to physically climb to the top and work on the electrical equipment. It takes time to reach the summit and dangers include falling and being struck by lightning should a storm suddenly brew.

With this in mind, why not try something safer – unless of course you are interested in these kinds of jobs.

Most people have cover for their homes and cars in case their microwaves start fires or they get into a fender bender in a car park but Directors and Officers insurance could pay multiples of billions if it were ever called upon. Directors and Officers insurance is generally used when companies and corporations face third party claims against executives. The social media cover is intended to be used if confidential data is released into the public sphere through any of the social media platforms or if a director can foresee an event where the stock price will drop significantly due to hearsay concerning disclosure. What this effectively means is that Corbis will pay for a positive PR dive to begin if at all possible before verifiable information is released.

Vice president of Financial Lines at Corbis, David Walters said: “The domination of the global news headlines by Wikileaks’ publication of leaked government documents is a vivid illustration of the power of social media. Although the focus has been on government there is, however, no room for complacency for business.”

And he’s absolutely right that while Assange has been highlighting governments’ disingenuous nature he has stated that fifty per cent of the material they have concerns the private sector and this type of disclosure, the disclosure of sensitive, confidential internal communication arrays an army of threats that could do serious harm to both reputations and profit margins of many household names.

Directors and Officers insurance cover has been used in such cases as the collapse of the Enron energy group and in the aftermath of the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Because the liability insurance was enacted before the spill reached a crisis point the executives were protected from future legal claims, the $400m policy protects the company in the event of liability claims against its managers and directorate.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (or NLP) is a form of psychotherapy that aims to get results quickly. It is designed to modify behavior, and has been used to treat a number of psychological problems in adults and children. The treatment has only been around for around thirty years, but has had an amount of success on a range of psychological problems.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is also now popular as a personal performance boost. The self help fraternity and life coaches have been, for many years, been adding NLP into their ranges. Popular uses of Neuro-Linguistic Programming include changing people’s attitudes to make them more aggressive when it comes to business, or more confident in interpersonal relationships. Neuro-Linguistic Programming has become a tool that allows people to get over personal hang-ups that they may have had for a very long time, even from childhood. It is helpful in aiding people get over mental scars they may have picked up in the past.

The fathers of Neuro-Linguistic Programming are John Grinder and Richard Bandler, who created the main form of NLP in the 1970s. Bandler was a student of the University of California, where Grinder was a well-known professor. They began to work together to examine some interesting language patterns that they found in earlier research by Fritz Perls.

It was in 1975 when the pair published their first book on the subject, ‘A Book about Language and Therapy’. They continued to add to this with a number of volumes which strengthened the research they had initially done.

Traditionally, therapy takes months, or even years before the patient sees the benefit. Neuro-Linguistic Programming took the world by storm because of its incredible speed at helping people get over barriers they had had for their whole lives. There are many reports of people who had shortcomings they had struggled with for their entire lives finding that they could break through them in a couple of short sessions of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Another benefit to NLP was that the individual himself could learn the techniques, and perform them without the use of a therapist. This is more powerful than first meets the eye, as when the patient begins to take control of their own treatment, the speed and efficacy of said treatment can be extraordinary.

NLP will continue to be an important part of psychotherapy, and looks to continue in its use and scope.

Although successful sales presentations are vital to the stability of any salesperson, many people do not enjoy giving them as the thought of speaking in front of a group of people, small or large, can make one nervous. However, with some practice, conducting successful sales presentations will build one’s confidence and giving presentations will be a much easier job in the future.

First, a successful sales presentation is accomplished through a confident delivery of the material and good presentation skills. With that said, one should not only dress appropriately for the event in question, but should try to appear confident and relaxed as well.

Eye contact should be maintained with one’s audience, and one should be careful with the types of gestures used. Inappropriate gestures should be kept out of the presentation. One needs to sound enthusiastic about his subject without sounding arrogant. One needs to speak in a moderate voice, not too loud, but not too soft. The audience needs to be able to hear what the speaker is saying. Audio and visual materials are idea in that they help to enforce ones message. However, if one uses these materials, he should make sure they are set up and are working properly before the presentation. The presentation should also be in a proper sequence. There should be a beginning, middle for explanation, conclusion and a time allotted for questions and answers.

There are many things to be avoided when giving a sales presentation. First of these, is that the speaker should be thoroughly knowledgeable about his topic or product. Many presentations fail because the speaker did not know enough about his topic. The speaker needs to research his topic ahead of time. Also, one should never be late. Being early is best as it gives one time to relax and prepare for the presentation. One should not slouch or fidget. He should always stand up straight. One should also avoid mumbling and excessive apologizing if he makes a mistake. He needs to simply move forward after a mistake. One should not use slang in the presentation. And finally, one should not block the view of any visual aids from the audience.

In conclusion, with proper preparation, one can conduct a successful presentation. Knowing one’s own strengths and weaknesses and working on them is a key to being confident enough to conduct a successful sales presentation.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Whether you actually suffer from an anxiety disorder or you tend to feel anxious from time to time, know that you are not alone. It is estimated that about 40 million adults in the U.S., or about 18% of the U.S. population, are affected by anxiety disorders. The next time anxiety strikes, try one of these tips to help you calm down.

Take Time to Breathe. Try to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and just focus on your breathing. You can calm yourself down rather quickly if you take deep breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth while taking slow, controlled breaths. Listen to each breath and concentrate on your breathing and nothing else.

Change Your Perspective. Sometimes the way we think or look at a situation can make us feel very anxious. Try to look at the situation in another way. Looking at a situation from another point of view can sometimes make us feel calm. Our minds are very powerful things and it’s good to try to view things from another perspective from time to time.

Practice Yoga. Yoga is a very powerful spiritual exercise that can calm you down when you’re feeling anxious. Many people practice yoga regularly simply because it helps them be calmer and less anxious. If you aren’t sure how to perform yoga you can find yoga mats and exercise videos online or at a variety of local stores including discount department stores and sporting goods stores. Many people swear by yoga and will admit that it helps them keep a clear head when they’re feeling anxiety.

Walk or Exercise. If you aren’t into yoga or you aren’t sure how to do it and you need help now, try walking. Walking or any physical activity that gets your body moving can help you calm down. Exercise releases endorphins which are chemicals in the brain that naturally help us to feel better.

Smile. It’s kind of weird how something so simple can have such a large impact but if you take the time to stop and smile you might be able to feel calmer in a matter of seconds. Smiling is easy, it’s free and it’s also very effective.

Remember that anxiety is not something to be ashamed of and you are definitely not alone. Millions of people feel anxious from time to time but there are some simple things you can do to help calm yourself down. Many people find that breathing and focusing on breathing will do the trick but if it doesn’t work, consider practicing yoga or exercising on a regular basis. Also, try to figure out the exact cause of your anxiety. This will help you begin learning how you can manage it and keep it from taking over your life.

Right now, it may seem like finding a job may be impossible. There seem to be few opportunities out there, and there are so many people applying for these jobs that the competition is making it difficult for any one person to find a suitable job. If you’re unemployed at the moment, here are five tips to help you find a job.

Start with something to get you by. If you’ve been unemployed for a while, you probably know how mind-numbing unemployment can be. Instead of just waiting around for the “perfect” job opportunity, you should just take a job that will get you by. A flexible part-time job means that you have the opportunity to check out new full-time jobs as they come up, but it also means you have something to stay busy and pay the bills. Delivering pizzas, mowing lawns, or walking dogs – none of these is beneath you. As long as you’re working to put food on the table and a roof overhead, you can be proud of your accomplishments.

Check out new career fields. One of the interesting things about the job market today is that there actually are plenty of jobs out there. The problem is just that there aren’t people with the skills to fit into these jobs. Since many of these jobs – some in the medical field, in particular – only take a year or less to prepare for, you may want to consider switching industries. It’s risky to go back to school to learn something new, but if you look at the jobs that are available and find something that appeals to you, it’s worth the risk. Many of these up and coming jobs have excellent salaries and are widely available. You just have to go after them!

Try a different type of resume, especially if you’re looking outside your field. If you are switching fields, especially if you think you’re qualified for the change based on prior experience rather than education, try switching from the traditional chronological resume to a more modern functional resume. The first puts your jobs in order by dates. The second groups jobs you’ve done – or specific experiences within jobs, if you’ve worked with a single company for a while – by the skills they developed in you. For instance, you might give examples of leadership, communication, and team development skills. As long as the skills match what your potential new employers are looking for, the functional resume is a great way to make yourself stand out. Plus, it’s a good option if there are gaps in your work history that are better explained in an interview than on paper.

Figure out what you’re worth. It’s important these days to understand that work compensation packages are different than they were five or ten years ago. You may think you’re worth a certain dollar amount plus vacation, health, and dental, but this may not necessarily be the case. Before you start holding out for a job that meets your ideal expectations, do some research to set some real expectations. You need to value yourself and what you do, but you also need to make sure your expectations are realistic in today’s market.

Improve your credit score. This seems random, but it actually isn’t. These days, employers are looking at all sorts of different ways to make sure they’re potential employees are responsible. It’s not uncommon for a credit score to be the one thing that separates a candidate who gets chosen for a job from one who doesn’t. Before you start throwing out applications, check out your credit report and score and see what you can do to polish that up while you’re polishing your resume.

There are times in one’s life when you have to go to a formal event; whether it is a charity bash or a great sporting occasion, and you are put next to a stranger and you have to make polite conversation to the fellow guests on your table. You want to have fun and so do they.

The beauty of these events, corporate hospitality events, or really any social activity, is the fact that the event itself instantly gives you something to talk about and an experience to share. However some people still find this a daunting experience. To help with those slightly awkward moments we’ve compiled a definitive list of “dos and donts”.

Dos to get the conversation flowing

1) Break the ice gently by kick-starting conversations with light-hearted topics.

2) “How do you know host/hostess’ and ‘Where do you live?” are great ways to get people talking. This method also lets you set the scene to introduce yourself.

3) Ask questions! Let the other person know that you are interested in what they have to say. People love to talk about themselves and this will help those who are less confident relax.

4) Keep your questions open so that you can elicit a full response. Using the information provided, guide the conversation to an area that you too are comfortable with.

5) If stuck for conversation, talk about the sporting/social activity that you are gathered at in an attempt to find common ground.

6) Be sure to talk to the guests both sides of where you are sitting. If you see someone who is not in conversation, try and include them.

Don’ts that are a sure-fire way never to be invited again

1) At all costs avoid the topics of sex, politics, credit crunch, religion and house prices!

2) In the event of opposing opinions: don’t raise your voice, argue or tease the other person.

3) Bear in mind the pace of the conversation at the table and don’t overdo it! You may think that awkward silence is bad but it’s equally a social faux pas to be too overbearing and inquisitive.

4) If you are bored with the current conversation, don’t glaze over and merely smile and nod in hopes the other person won’t notice you’re not listening. There’s nothing worse than smiling about something that’s unbefitting of a smile!

5) Don’t, while in mid conversation with someone, make eyes and start chatting to someone else sitting four people away – this is the ultimate rebuff.

So there you have it. Whether you are looking to book lords hospitality or have been invited to the very latest theatre production courtesy of your vendor you’ll never be without something to talk about at the event.
